Wallace Road
Wallace Road is a short street running west from High Street in North Billerica, between Marion Road and Corthell Road. It was laid out in August 1911 on "Hillcrest," the "Estate of Geo. H. Hill Esq., North Billerica Mass.," a plan surveyed by James A. Bancroft and recorded on Nov. 9, 1911 in Plan Book 29, Plan 58. The plan offered "only elevated lots between Boston & Maine car shops (to employ about 3000 men) and Center of the Town," on land west of High Street adjoining the estate of the late Governor Thomas Talbot. Its five streets ran west from High Street: Marian, Wallace, Corthell, Mellen and Bartlett Roads. Wallace Road had small lots on its north side and, on its south side at High Street, a "One Acre Farm" with a house and barn. The Talbot Addition plan of 1913 (Plan Book 30, Plan 57) and Clarence E. Carter's plan of Hillcrest of April 1914 (Plan Book 31, Plan 61) extended Wallace Road on paper west across Hillcrest Avenue to Talbot Boulevard, but only the part near High Street was built.
The selling agents named on the 1911 plan were the Pelkey Wallace Company of 101 Tremont Street, Boston, and the street probably took its name from the firm, although no record says so. The directories of 1916 and 1919 list it as "Wallace Road (N B) from High n Corthell rd northerly," and it has kept the name since 1911.
A warrant article of 1915 asked $800 for "the extension of water mains on Corthell Road, 600 feet, and Wallace Road, 300 feet, at Hillcrest," and the water commissioners' tables list a Wallace Road main from 1915 on. In 1929 the town voted to build a tarred gravel road on High Street "from Wallace Road to the Boston and Maine Repair Shop entrance." No vote accepting Wallace Road as a public way has been found, and it is not on the town's list of accepted streets printed in 1956. It was not on the official town map of 1831 and was not among the roads accepted in 2016.
